A historical route, a memory, a bridge and a link among many different European points of view and cultures, a cultural treasure fostering social and economic development.

That is the legacy of the ancient  Claudia Augusta Way, laid out by Drusus and completed by his son, emperor Claudius, between 46 and 47 A.D. to link the ports of the Adriatic Sea and the Danube plains.

To quote a writing on the ‘colonna feltrina’ in Cesio, a pillar located in small town in the nearby Prealps, the way led "Ab Altino usque ad flumen Danuvium": From Altino (which originated Venice), the Claudia Augusta Way led to Augusta Vindelicum, today’s Augsburg and thence to the river Danube and to central Europe.

The Brandoliny were leaders of armies and the easy-to-read book provides a summary of the wars and battles in which the castle and the Brandolini family were involved.

The book also deals with the history of the Venetian armies and their role under the Republic of Venice over nearly one thousand years. Furthermore, the book features a compendium of the history of mining and smithery in the area together with a number of cards technically descrbing a number of arms from the castle’s collection.

The administration of justice in the fief of Valmareno fell to the Brandolini. The book tells of the trials held in the area and reported by the proceedings preserved in the county’s archive, of major criminals, who were inflicted corporal punishments like torture, mutilation or decapitation.

At times sentences could be commuted to fees or forced labour. The analysis begins with the Roman law (Justinian Code) and moves on to the Longobard law (the Code of Rotary), the Venetian law and the law in force within the fief of Valmareno.

“Brando” derives from the Germanic word for “to brandish” and was the ancient name of the family. It was adapted to the Italian language and became “Brandolini”.

The Brandolini had been leaders of armies for more than 1,000 years, had run the fief of Valmareno for more than 500 years and the castle was their dwelling. Their motto was “impavidum ferient”.
